Whiskey Smash [Cocktail Recipe]

Created by Gates Otsuji of The Standard in New York City, this bulk cocktail pairs familiar ingredients of bourbon and mint with citrus and ginger. It makes multiple servings—perfect for toting in a thermos to a picnic or other outing.


  • 12 oz. bourbon
  • 4½ oz. water
  • 5 tsp. demerara sugar or sugar-in-the-raw
  • 30 mint leaves
  • 2 lemons
  • Ginger beer or seltzer (optional)


Combine the bourbon and water, then stir in the sugar until dissolved. Bit by bit, spank the mint leaves and sink them into the liquid.

Let the mixture sit for ten minutes, then squeeze in both lemons. Strain, taking
care to remove the mint leaves and lemon seeds, and place the liquid into the refrigerator to chill. When it’s cold, pour into a 24-oz. Thermos and fill with ice. To serve, pour over ice and top with seltzer or ginger beer, if desired.
