Hudson Manhattan Straight Rye (Batch 5), 46%

A well-choreographed interplay of rich dark fruit—plums, Luxardo cherries, Concord grapes—and deep spices on the nose, along with hints of wood char and licorice; it turns tropical and nutty when water is added. The palate is richly spiced—cedar, ginger, cloves, allspice—and silky with extra-dark chocolate, grilled plums, espresso beans, and hints of aged cigar. It ends rich and toasty, with lush oak, hookah tobacco, and coffee bean.

Hudson Do The Rye Thing New York Straight, 46%

Hudson Do The Rye Thing New York Straight bottle. Made from a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, and aged at least 3 years. The nose is freshly sweet, with notes of orange tea, orange peel, nectarine, licorice, dark chocolate, leather, and dried flowers. A creamy palate offers marmalade, fruitcake, baking spice, and barrel char. The finish is light but lengthy, with bursts of dark fruit tart, black currant, and vanilla bean. Excellent complexity for a whiskey this young.

Hudson Whiskey Back Room Deal Peated Scotch Barrel Finished, 46%

Though reticent at first, the nose opens up to honey, caramel, and some pleasant mustiness, followed by a late wave of sweet and savory spices. There’s an undercurrent of smoke, too, which transfers smoothly onto the palate, though it’s overpowered by just-burnt cinnamon sugar toast and slightly charred sugar cookie. Fig Newton and raisin are also here in spades, creating a dark, fruity experience. The finish is short and hot, and it delivers a smooth hit of menthol.

Hudson Four Grain Bourbon, 46%

A lovely balance of oak, clove, and sweetness come together on the nose, while the flavor shows both big impact and refinement. Oak-driven in style, with plenty of tannins and tobacco leaf, but the sweetness and structure stand up, pouring flavors of pecan, caramelized nuts, and toasted spices, with hints of pine before the persistent finish. A very solid and nicely polished bourbon.

Hudson Whiskey Short Stack Maple Syrup Barrel Finished, 46%

The nose is fruity and chalky with notes of orange peel, clementine, orange Tic Tac, plus Tang orange drink mix when water is added. That profile continues onto the palate where a creamy texture conveys spiced-orange slices and yogurt-covered raisins. The finish is mouth-coating, with an added kick of spice and satisfactory length. The flavors here are perhaps a bit unexpected given the finish, but they’re consistent and controlled throughout.

Hudson Baby Straight Bourbon (Batch 9), 46%

The barrel dominates here, by design, and it manifests on the nose with fresh-cut oak, cinnamon, black tea leaves, cashews, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, and a sprinkling of spices. Savory and oak-forward on the chewy palate, which has roasted nuts, grilled corn, dark chocolate, peppermint stick, dried chile, black pepper, espresso bean, and tobacco leaf, all sweeping into a lengthy, chocolaty finish.

Hudson Manhattan Rye Whiskey, 46%

Hot nose, plenty of rye spice — it is 100% rye — mint, bay leaf, sweet clove. Quite a kick, but there's good flavor behind it; more spice, oak, and a firm sweetness. The finish is quite quick, just some dry rye in the back of the mouth, and gone. Better-behaved than most Hudson whiskeys I've had; hardly mellow, but enjoyable. Price per 375 ml.

Hudson Maple Cask Rye, 46%

Rye whiskey aged in casks used to age maple syrup. As penetrating an aroma as maple is, it’s very subtle here. The nose is rye whiskey—spicy, oily, bitter/minty—with just the barest hint of maple. The maple peeps up mid-palate for a sweet turn and lingers into the finish. I need to be convinced of the attraction; the maple and rye jar a bit when jammed together. And the price—$82 for 750 ml—seems crazy. Price is per 375 ml.

Hudson New York Corn Whiskey, 46%

Nose is sweet corn, with some mintiness to it, and some herbal notes; hot, but not off-putting. Tastes are not as sweet as expected. A bit flat, though the sweet corn does come through toward the end. Again, though, this one is quite hot, which is not surprising; the Hudson Baby Bourbons — which this is the foundation for — have struck me as hot also. Price is per 375 ml.
