Distilled from Rogue’s Dead Guy ale without hops. Captivating aromas of charcoal, barbecue rub, dark berries, licorice, and vanilla. The palate is laden with spice and more barbecue notes—along with grilled oranges, succulent dark berries, molasses, burnt marshmallow, savory spices, and ashy fire pit. The finish comes on strong—abounding with heat and barbecue, grilled fruits, chocolate-covered espresso beans, toasted vanilla, caramel, and burnt sugar. Lovely charred and burnt notes throughout, creating our highest-scoring Rogue whiskey to date.

Tropical fruit on the verge of overripeness: pineapple, papaya, kiwi, plus jasmine flowers, almond halva, and the piney-lemon aroma of hops. The hoppiness is evident on the palate, which is light in body and consequently less expressive in flavor, though there’s dry nuttiness and grain, overlaid with sweeping tropical fruit. More of the same hoppy, juicy fruit flavors juxtaposed with oak on the finish. If you like beery whiskey, this is one to try. (10,000 bottles)

Partial maturation in barrels that held Rogue’s Rolling Thunder imperial stout lends this whiskey aromas of hops, dry coffee grounds, cocoa powder, and vegetal earthiness; there’s also mesquite barbecue chips, vanilla, and amaretto. More beer-forward flavors on the palate, along with spice and chocolate, some dry nuttiness, and citrus oil. It’s consistent from start to finish, ending with piney hops, oily citrus, drying oak, white pepper, and roasted nuts.

Showing its youth through an obvious green character that peers from beneath a cloak of campfire and applewood smoke, with banana as the prominent fruit, along with secondary apple, citrus, and a peculiar rubber tire note. The palate is light-bodied and overtly sweet, with grass, marshmallow, and vanilla. Reminiscent of a Lowland malt, which only contributes to the disjointed feeling of the whole package.

I love Rogue beers, as well as Rogue’s attitude and philosophy. But this whiskey just tastes too immature—harsh, sweet, and one-dimensional. Maybe with some additional aging it might come around, mellow out, and develop, but it has a long way to go.
