Proof and Wood 7 year old Crossborder Jackpot, 53.5%

The nose is ripe with lemon peel and strong citrus. It turns sweeter the longer you stick with it, veering toward orange marmalade, lemonade, and a bit of wood spice. That lemon follows through to the palate, where it’s joined by a fiery burst of white pepper, vanilla extract, and tangy fruit. The finish is smooth and it lingers on, leaving the lemons behind in favor of vanilla. (4,836 bottles)

Litchfield Distillery 5 year old Double Barreled, 45%

Herbal and citrus-forward aromas in the glass, reminiscent of Moroccan mint lemonade and lemon poppyseed muffins, plus baking spices and young oak. While slightly woody, citrus and mint sing through. The palate is more subdued with lemon candies and strawberry soda enveloped in richer flavors of toffee and nougat. This wraps up like an Andes mint, with a long, dry finish.

Balcones Big Baby Bottled in Bond Tequila Cask Finished Corn Whiskey (Batch BB BiB 22-1), 50%

The nose is pungent, with overripe fruits, raisins, figs, apples, and apricots with a heavy pour of pepper. Water brings out a honeyed sweetness with notes of herbal cough drops. The palate leads with green veggies and black pepper. There’s chocolate and instant coffee, too, but from palate to finish, this whiskey is predominantly peppery.

Iron Fish Maple Syrup Barrel Finished, 43%

There is light fruitiness on the nose in the form of melon candy, apple, pear slices in syrup, and blueberry pie, alongside some new leather and chocolate-covered graham crackers. The palate is likewise syrupy, with notes of sweet mint and herbs, blackberry tart, and with water added, the woodiness of an antiques shop. A mid-length to short finish brings shortbread cookies, vanilla cream, and cider vinegar.

Fort Hamilton Double Barrel Blend of Straights, 46%

Roasted nuts, overripe banana, lemon peel, and skinny vanilla latte make for a mixed-up, off-kilter nose. The palate brings more coherence—there’s dark chocolate, ripe red fruit, a strong hit of espresso, and a hint of caramel. Water unearths more red berries, as well as candied orange. A short finish keeps those berries top of mind, and they’re covered with a rich chocolate drizzle.

Tullibardine 228 Burgundy Cask Finished, 43%

An elegant nose, with plenty of light but well-balanced fruits. The aroma is faintly tropical with strong citrus and ginger-lemon gummies. The sweet and tangy fruits are tempered by sea breeze and a light salinity. On the palate, the citrus tartness dials back to reveal candied oranges, plums, and tangerines. The finish mirrors the nose’s elegance, and, while light, satisfies. (7,800 bottles)

Gold Bar Rickhouse Cask Strength French Oak Stave Finished, 51.5%

The nose brings hickory smoke, molasses, and a prominent rubberiness, like tires peeling out. With time it opens up to reveal berries, vanilla bean, and a heavy hit of oak. The rubberiness persists on the palate, where it’s paired with waxy fruits, toasted vanilla, and burnt mesquite. This is savory and oaky with a finish that doesn’t let up, ending dry with charred wood.

Bearface 7 year old, 42.5%

The nose is pulled in several different directions; there’s an earthiness akin to old barn, but a certain breadiness too, by way of buttered toast. Lemon pound cake and red fruit appear with the addition of water, and as it sits in the glass longer, it gets sweeter and sweeter. A reedy palate emphasizes vanilla ice cream, honey, and all things sweet, though there’s a light zip of lemon running underneath. The sweetness sticks around all the way through the finish.

Bushmills Prohibition Recipe, 46%

This Peaky Blinders tie-in was aged for a minimum of 3 years. The nose is punchy, with lemon, sharp apple, peppercorn spices, jalapeño, and herbal notes. Lightly structured with honey, vanilla fudge, lemon, citrus, and herbs, then a dust-up between pepper and spice. This young upstart has sufficient force to take over your cocktails while you binge watch the final season.

Proof and Wood Vertigo (2021), 51.15%

This blend has a bold nose, opening with overripe berries and figs and a heavy dose of vanilla extract, plus musty leather, butterscotch, and marshmallow fluff. On first sip, it is more rounded, with cola and caramel adding sweetness to a fairly woody drink. Peppermint candies and sweet fennel echo in the background, though the cola sings the loudest. Benjamin Prichard’s, 40%

On the nose this is light but delivers a broad bouquet: Sweet corn, lemon peel, and lime all rest on a backbone of wood sugar and barrel char. The palate is like a fruit basket: cherries, candied orange, and pears, but more so a fruit snack quality pervades. The aroma and flavor of new oak holds this whiskey back a bit, and the finish borders on bitter.

Spirit Works Distillery Four Grain, 45%

Viscous and spiced on the nose, with other hints of aromas that are very restrained. It offers flavors of grape jelly, stone fruits, peach pie, and white pepper, but it never really opens up on the back palate. Well-spiced on a mid-length finish that again is quite restrained. Solid, but this one never really blossoms and lets fly, and there is no real diversity of flavor. (2,000 bottles)

Nobushi, 40%

Sweet lemon, light florals, and buttery notes, with clotted cream on scones, oak shavings, nutmeg, and cinnamon, but it’s a delicate proposition with little intensity. The palate is thin, buttery, and lemony, with sherbet, sweet citrus, icing sugar, and cinnamon. The mouthfeel improves constantly with vanilla cream, light citrus, and hints of cocoa. The finish is long and spicy, with candied lemon flavors. On the light side, but displays a likable array of flavors.
