Michael Collins “The Prediction,” 40%

The year 2022 marks the centenary of Collins’s death in County Cork at the age of 31. A blend of triple-distilled whiskeys, the nose offers vanilla, light citrus, sponge fingers, soft peach, lemon drizzle cake, and a moderate level of spice. It’s a relaxed dram for neat sipping, but has all the right qualities for mixing: sweet lemon, vanilla fudge, fresh apple, pear, and zippy spices.

Bulleit, 45%

The high rye content delivers a laudable balance between the wood-sugar sweetness and rye spiciness, with its nose of maple syrup, pecan, nutmeg, pepper, and fresh oak. On the palate it presents sweet maple syrup with raisin and fig notes, black currant jelly, leather, root beer, and toasted oak before the spices start kicking up dust. Pepper and clove endure as the cola, nut, and root beer make a return.

Samuel Gelston’s, 40%

Floral and fragrant aromas of honeysuckle, vanilla, candied lemon peel, toffee, lemon curd, Bit-O-Honey, and a touch of spice. The lemon cuts back the sweetness, achieving a lovely balance and giving this blend the edge over Gelston’s no-age-statement single malt. The attractive palate of honeydew melon, vanilla, waffle ice-cream cone, creamy toffee, and crusty bread concludes with a spicy mouth-coating finish.

Leopold Bros. Three Chamber Bottled in Bond Holiday Edition (2021 Release), 50%

Sweet fruits on the nose, with cherry, melon, and raspberry, as well as honey and fresh grain. Nicely balanced and inviting on the palate, with loads more cherry and honey sweetness balanced against herbs and grain. The finish is long, syrupy, and flavorful. There is a certain grain-influenced dryness at times, but this is a well-made whiskey with a bright future as it continues to develop. (4,000 bottles)

Waterford The Arcadian Series Organic Gaia 2.1, 50%

Light and vibrant aromas of sliced apple, pomelo, barley, warm milk on hot porridge, and creamed coconut show on the nose of this whisky produced from the 2016 harvest of organic Irish barley. Crisp barley, stewed apple, and ruby grapefruit to taste, it adds vanilla, fudge, and a cluster of pepper at the tip of the tongue before diluting to reveal malty notes laced with bitter plain chocolate. (5,000 bottles for the U.S.)

Samuel Gelston’s, 40%

Heady aromas of honey, Corn Flakes, vanilla, sliced almond, oat biscuits, and crunchy red apples on the nose, with top notes of fresh green foliage. This is a well-made, easy sipper with a lightweight mouthfeel and generous sweetness, replete with a palate of lemon, honey, menthol, and hints of peppermint, followed by custard creams and shortbread before spices dig in on the finish.

Manatawny Select Four Grain, 59%

Dark, almost ruby in color, with sweet hints of pastry shop and vanilla frosting, and candy store notes of strawberry Twizzlers and bubble gum. The palate is rich with chocolate plum pudding and baking spice, but needs water, which reveals black cherry, chocolate fudge, and Red Hots. This one gets off to a good start on the nose, but proves somewhat lacking in depth, though with excellent flavors.

Green River, 45%

Aromas of vanilla, Tootsie Roll, caramel, and cinnamon meet more fruity, acidic scents of lime, lemon, and pineapple on the nose, with a sweeter note of fresh melon. Lots of chocolate and pistachio nuttiness on the palate; it’s also spicy and offers notes of bitter espresso and pepper spice. The finish is also very chocolaty and has a pleasant tartness. Well-executed flavors, though a bit short at the end.
