An Apple a Day keeps the doctor away...or in this case keeps you warm and cozy. “This cocktail evokes memories of grandma's baked apple pie, the crisp autumn air, burning leaves, and hayrides through the orchard,” says Allen Lancaster, master cocktail craftsman at The Bar at The Spectator in Charleston, SC. “Bright notes of apple and acidity from the lemon up front are complemented with the fall spices on the back palate at the finish.”

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 oz. bourbon
  • ½ oz. apple brandy
  • ½ oz. Licor 43 or other vanilla liqueur
  • 1 oz. organic apple cider
  • ¾ oz. lemon juice
  • ¾ oz. fall spice syrup (recipe below)
  • Garnish: Granny smith apple slices

DIRECTIONS

Combine all ingredients in shaker with ice, shake vigorously, and strain into coupe. Garnish with fanned Granny Smith apple slices.

How to make Fall Spice Syrup

  • 1 cup water
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 6 dried allspice berries
  • ¼ teaspoon fresh grated nutmeg
  • ½ pound sugar

Put water and spices in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Slowly add sugar, stirring until dissolved. Remove from heat. Strain through a fine mesh strainer, place in a storage container, and refrigerate for up to 10 days.
